A three-member Central Government expert team visited Vijayanagara district, Karnataka, to assess the impact of drought and verify reported agricultural losses. The inspection followed the state government’s request for ₹249 crore in financial assistance to compensate for crop damage affecting more than 2.71 lakh hectares. Led by senior official Ajit Kumar Sahu, the team conducted field visits to rural areas in Harapanahalli and Huvina Hadagali taluks. During the assessment, officials examined damaged crops, reviewed the availability of employment opportunities under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), and inspected local drinking water conditions. The visit aimed to evaluate the extent of drought-related hardship experienced by farmers and rural communities and verify the information submitted by the state government. The findings of the assessment are expected to help authorities determine the severity of the situation and consider appropriate relief measures. The inspection highlights the importance of coordinated action to support drought-affected farmers and ensure essential resources for vulnerable rural households.
